The Meeting with Valmiki, Deogarh, Central India, c.1780,
gouache on paper, a scene from the Ramayana. Valmiki ('anthill' after his dwelling) is the legendary author of the Ramayana, a mythical sage who was visited repeatedly by Rama and Sita during their exile. Sita stayed with him when banished from Rama's kingdom and he educated her twins.
